FAQs: The Great Australian Novel Package
Who should use the Great Australian Novel Package? This package is designed for authors who require text layout, a cover design and printing. It's perfect for you if you would like to keep costs down but still want a professional-looking book and high-quality printing.
How many files do I have to submit? When you go to the submission page you will see there are six buttons for you to upload files. The first is the file for the text of your book. You can only submit your text in a single file. If it is currently in multiple files, please paste all of the text into a single file before submitting. The second file is for your cover; either your rough design or the description of your cover. These two files are required. The remaining buttons are for the image for your cover, if you have one, and if you have a barcode, back cover blurb or author photo for your cover you can also submit these. You can submit a maximum of six files for your package.
Is there a maximum file size? Yes, the maximum size for each file is 2.5 MB. If you have files larger than this, please contact us to arrange your submission.
Why do you contact me to confirm my price and number of pages before proceeding? We contact you to confirm details because we want to make sure the page estimate that you calculated and therefore the cost you expect to pay are correct. If you incorrectly calculated your page length and therefore your cost and so do not wish to proceed with your package, we will happily refund your deposit in full.
Does the Great Australian Novel Package include editing and proofreading? No it does not. It includes cover design, interior layout, printing and delivery.
What changes can I make to my proofs? Your package includes three hours of corrections to your first proofs, which will normally be enough for minor corrections throughout a book, such as spelling corrections and punctuation. If you make significant changes, extra costs will be incurred. We will notify you if this is the case before proceeding. The best way to avoid these extra costs is to check your book carefully before submitting it.
Can I make changes to my final proofs? Yes you can, but extra costs will be incurred. We will notify you of the extra costs before proceeding.
How do I submit changes to my proofs? Changes to your proofs can be sent back to us in three ways: 1) you can use the mark up and retouching tools in Acrobat to mark up the PDF we send you; 2) you can supply your changes in a Word file (make sure you include the page number and paragraph of each change); 3) you can print the PDF you receive and mark your changes on this hard copy, and then post this hard copy back to us.
Can I make changes to the package? You can add to your package; for example, we can provide a quote for editing or proofreading, or add an ISBN and barcode, and this can be added to your package. However, the package itself cannot be changed because we keep the prices down by standardising everything.
Can I sell my book? Yes you certainly can. Editing and proofreading are essential for producing a professional publication for sale, so if you are planning on selling your book make sure you have these done, either by us or somebody else. And if you are planning to sell through bookshops you'll need an ISBN and barcode.
How long does it take to produce my book? You will receive your first proofs via email in PDF format seven to ten working days after submitting your files and paying your deposit. If you make minor changes to your first proofs, you will receive your final proofs in three to five working days. If you make significant changes to your first proofs, you will receive final proofs in seven to ten working days. You will receive your printed books in ten to fourteen working days after approving your final proofs and paying the balance of your account. So, in total the process usually takes around four to six weeks (provided you check and return your proofs quickly).
How do I pay for my book? When you hit the submit button on our submission page, you will be redirected to the PayPal site. At this stage you are required to pay a $250 (inc. GST) deposit for your book. You can pay by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) or through your PayPal account, if you have one. When you have approved your final proofs via our online proof approval form, we'll send you a PayPal invoice for the balance of your payment. When this final payment has been made your book will be printed.
Who will print my book? Your book will be printed by McPherson's Printing, Australia's best book printer, on their new short-run printing system.
How do I receive my books? Your books will be delivered to you, anywhere in Australia. This is included in the cost of the package.
Are sample books available? Yes, just send an email to info@mhps.com.au requesting a book and we'll send one out free of charge. Don't forget to include your address!
